Rules on hiring employees in Montenegro

Generally, if you’re planning on hiring Montenegrin citizens within your company, they will need to be able to provide you with proof that they are:
15 years of age or older
In good health
Able to fulfill any additional requirements defined by the law, depending on the nature of the job
It is important to note that everyone under 18 is considered a minor under Montenegrin law, and while hiring minors is perfectly legal, you will have to get their legal guardian’s written consent first. They will also need to get approval from a medical professional that confirms they are capable of doing the job, and that the job is not a threat to their health.
On the other hand, if you are planning on hiring foreigners, you should know that it will be possible only if they possess an adequate work permit and temporary residence.

The minimum wage in Montenegro

In accordance with Labor Laws, wages in Montenegro are calculated based on the law or employment contracts. Still, the minimum wage salary must not go below 30% of the average salary in the country (last six months).
Official statistical organization in Montenegro called MONSTAT calculates the average earnings in the country, so you can always check out the newest data on their website.
Currently, the minimum wage is set at 222,00 EUR, and it’s been like that since July 1st, 2019.

Rules on working times in Montenegro

Standard working hours on a weekly basis in Montenegro are 40hrs per week. Minors are the exception to this rule as they’re not allowed to work more than 35 hours per week.
Employees working full-time have the right to a 30-minute break in a working day. Similarly, anyone working for more than four and less than six hours a day is entitled to a 15-minute break. Lastly, anyone who works over 10 hours in a day is entitled to a 45-minute break.
In addition, employees have the right to rest at least 12hrs in a working day, and they’re entitled to 24hr break once a week (typically on Sundays). If for any reason, the employee has to work during their weekly break, they’re entitled to additional 24hrs of rest the following week.

Rules on overtime work, holidays, and sick leave in Montenegro

There are many rules defined by law that deal with overtime work, holidays, and sick leave. Generally speaking, your employees are not allowed to work more than 10 hours per week when it comes to overtime work. You will also have to notify the labor inspector and make a written decision to notify your employees.
When it comes to holidays, every employee is entitled to annual leave that has to be used. Your employees are also entitled to sick pay, especially in instances where their injury occurs in the workplace.
